Heal Yourself

How Human Energy Can Support Healing and Change DNA

Introduction

The principle of using energy to heal is not a new concept. In fact, it has been practiced in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for over 3000 years! Not surprisingly, most ancient healing techniques around the world have always recognized and practiced this concept. Ayurvedic medicine[1], First Nations traditional healing[2], and even catholic religions believed in this power and called upon it through prayer[3].

The trouble with trying to find supporting research and evidence is not that it doesn’t exist, it’s that everyone seems to have different terms for it. Some call it life force (doshas), some call it prana, some refer to it as the human energy field, ethereal energy, or bio-energy, some refer to it as grace or spirit, and some call it aura. It is my belief that this lack of common language is only delaying the opportunity to fully harness the power of this healing. Until research can come together on what exactly to call it, efforts to help those who are suffering, whether from mental or physical illness, is likely to be lost in translation.

What if we just forget about what to call it for now and just focus on what it is. We have the ability to harness the natural healing energy that already exists within us and not only change ourselves, but change others too! Don’t believe me? Let’s go back to the basics and I’ll let you make your own judgement.

The Human Energy Field

What is this exactly?

The first scientific measurement of the magnetic energy field of the human body was performed in 1963, when researchers recorded the magnetic field being emitted from the human heart. This measurement method was coined the magnetocardiogram (MCG)[4]. To be clear, there was no device strapped to the individual when they took this measurement. Unlike the electrocardiogram (ECG) where electrodes are attached to the skin, this measurement was taken from the energetic field being emitted outside of the body!

By 1968, they had used the MCG to measure the energy field being emitted from the brain and were able to determine that the signals from neuronal axons were a thousand times weaker than the energy being emitted by the heart. Yet, even at these levels, biomagnetism readings are helping the medical system make advances in supporting patients with neurological conditions such as epilepsy, dyslexia, and Parkinson’s disease.

When it comes to the energy being emitted from the heart, science tells us that this is the strongest magnetic field produced by the body. In fact, this energy is so powerful that it has been scientifically proven to transfer to another person’s energy field, even without physical contact with the other! Even more mind blowing is that the energy being emitted from the heart and outside of the body has been scientifically proven to strengthen or weaken based on one’s state. For example, love or caring increases the energetic field whereas frustration and anger decrease the energetic field. Like that wasn’t enough to blow your mind, what about the fact that “one’s emotional state, may affect cellular function” [5].

For obvious reasons, since its discovery, the interest in biomagnetism and the human energy field has continued to grow and has fascinated researchers all over the globe.

How does it work – Scientifically I mean

First, I want to be clear that this subject is incredibly complicated, and, like a child trying to put a blank puzzle together, I have pieced together as much information as I can to be able to put this incredible awareness into words on paper for you (which does not do it justice at all). All you need to do is read the one piece of scientific literature sited below and I am sure you will realize as well how little we, as a humans, actually know about anything at all. To save you the discomfort, and the time, I’ll sum it up for you the best I can here and try to show you the whole picture, as I understand it.

This paper on Quantum and Electromagnetic Fields in Our Universe and Brain: A New Perspective to Comprehend Brain Function, published by the National Institute of Health, explains the theory behind how our universe, including our body and brain, is comprised of energy waves. The notion that the waves in our brain are “not only restricted to the brain, but that they easily diffuse out and form an interconnected wave network with our universe” is also an accepted theory. The way we perceive our environment is through our sensory organs (eyes, ears, skin, etc.), which transmit electrical signals to our brain. Our brain then “creates” the object based on our perception of said object, as derived from the electrical signals received.

One could easily question the signals themselves, or the interpretation of these signals, as both are completely reliant on the observer’s perspective (we do not have a patented electrical converter in all of our brains that ensures signals are interpreted the same way, nor do we have control over the transmission of these signals). To complicate things even more, the brain can activate these electrical signals without stimulation through the sensory organs. Take hypnosis or virtual reality for example. This means, the brain does not technically need the physical world to create its own reality.

Whoa! Mind blowing right? The study goes on to discuss the connectedness to the one consciousness through the ability of the brain to connect to all energy waves and quantum fields, but that goes a little over my head at the moment, and is not the point of this article, so we will leave that for another issue at some point in the future, if I am guided there. For now, let’s simplify things a little.

The Tangible Science

Ok, so if the energy from our brain can create our own reality, and we have seen that the energy from our heart is even more powerful than that from our brain, there must be evidence to tell us what the human heart is capable of, right?

This study of the human energy field (HEF), coming out of Saybrook University is a little easier to understand. This study confirms that our energy has the ability to change not only our own lives but can impact those around us as well. In fact, this study provides evidence of the body’s aura (energy field), using new technology which can detect visible colours of energy emitting from within the body and emanating outside of the body! According to other studies referenced, this emitting energy can expand anywhere from three feet to an infinite distance away from the body!

This study of the HEF pays particular attention to the power of the energy that comes from our heart and takes the position that the heart plays a bigger role than the brain in determining how the body will function, including whether the body will thrive or develop disease, and how our emotional state can impact the energy of others around us as well. It states:

“The energy emitted by the body has also been found to change and vibrate in varying frequencies depending on the individual’s physical and emotional state and permeates every cell within the body. Research shows that this field also flows outward and fills the space around the body and can be felt by other individuals as well.  When the energetic components of this field are not functioning properly, illness and disease can occur.”

How does this happen? The study explains that “…changing heart rhythms, which are greatly influenced by emotion, produce varying energetic and electromagnetic waves, which can be detected not only by the individual’s brain, but by the brains and nervous systems of those nearby, and upon interaction, an individual’s brain waves could synchronize with another person’s heartbeat. This is known as entrainment. These findings suggest that the electromagnetic fields produced by the heart are another source of communication.”

In another research paper, The Electricity of Touch: Detection and measurement of cardiac energy exchange between people, evidence is provided to support that your energy field is magnetized so much when you have feelings of love and caring that this electrical energy can actually be measured in the cells of another who is in close proximity to you. It also demonstrates that the energetic capacity on the other is even stronger with cross directional touch (left hand to right hand)[6]. This research claims:

“Preliminary results indicate, further, that individuals who intentionally increase their cardiac coherence by maintaining a focused state of sincere love or appreciation can induce changes in the structure of water and in the conformational state of DNA”

Ok… You’ve got my attention. Tell me more about the impact on health.

Ok, first, some basics… we all know that our bodies are made up of electrical and chemical signals, right? (If this is new to you, it’s true, trust me, but you can read more here.) And we know that energy comes in two forms, negative and positive, right? (Think of a battery cell, but if you want more on this in a human cell, you can read more here.) But did you also know that “At the level of our physical bodies, the DNA molecule in each cell acts as an “antenna” and demodulator that is tuned to the organizing field. At the macroscopic level, the individual DNA molecules are linked through an “energetic connection” in the form of conventional magnetic fields, which are organized in overlapping patches of cells.[7]. I know, right?!

Now, let’s consider the placebo effect. This is the mind’s ability to create a positive outcome when it believes sincerely that the outcome is possible, regardless of whether the intervention is real or not. For example, in scientific studies where they are testing the efficacy of a drug, they will provide test subjects with either a sugar pill or the drug (all randomly selected so the participants have no idea which one they are getting). When a test subject believes they have received the drug that they are convinced will help them feel better, even though they actually received the sugar pill, they experience positive results. In some cases, completely cure their ailments!

More recently, they have taken the placebo effect to a whole new level with performing “fake” surgeries and have seen incredible results. Patients are put through the whole process of preparing for and going through ‘surgery’, to the point where a surgical team will actually cut into the person while the patient watches a video on the screen of the same type of surgery. The patient thinks the surgery they are watching is their own, happening right now, but it’s just a pre-recorded video of someone else’s surgery. The surgeon doesn’t really do anything, other than cut them open and close them up, but the patient ‘saw’ the surgery take place, with their own eyes, so they are 100% convinced they went through it. They go through all the same recovery protocols as a real surgery and recover fully. The ‘surgery’ fixed their issue!

In fact, the power of what the mind and heart believe and how this belief can support healing, even applies to the doctor. If someone trusts their doctor, they will believe what the doctor says, and their body will respond in line with this. This is where I want to draw your attention to the nocebo effect. This is the reverse of the placebo effect (nocebo being negative belief, placebo being positive belief). If the doctor tells you that you are not going to recover, or have a fatal illness, or you have a condition or disease (although they haven’t even done testing yet) you will believe them and your body will manifest this outcome. This is why I encourage my clients not to label themselves at all. I encourage them refrain from saying “I have… (condition)” or “I am… (illness)”, and say “I am currently managing symptoms of …” instead.

To read more about the placebo and nocebo effect, take a look at these short articles from the National Institute of Health: The Art of Surgery: The Strange World of the Placebo Response, and The nocebo effect and its relevance for clinical practice.

The full science behind the placebo and nocebo effect are still being studied, but the evidence is clear, we have the power to change how the cells in our bodies behave and respond. We get to choose if they respond positively or negatively based on how we think and feel. This evidence, therefore, also challenges the belief that we are victims of our DNA, which brings me to the study of Epigenetics.

Epigenetics is the study of how influences outside of our cells, such as nutrition, lifestyle, stress, exercise, and mindset, affect our gene expression. Although this is a fairly new area of study, there is a ton of information and data to support this theory already, and scientists and medical professionals are seeing the results in their patients. More specifically, as it relates to the subject being discussed here, your emotions, whether negative or positive, will create an appropriate energetic response in the body, therefore, changing the environment of your cells. Negative emotions will create stress, positive emotions will create love. All you have to do is choose which energy you want to expose your cells to.

In the case of love and caring, as we saw earlier, this energy is so strong, it can even be measured outside of the body, while negative energy stays within the body. To go even further, this paper on the Modulation of DNA Conformation by Heart-Focused Intention showed that one could unwind the strands of DNA contained in a test tube simply by focusing positive thoughts towards it! Remember earlier when we said the energy from the heart is a form of communication? Well, that’s exactly what it’s doing here… it is communicating with the DNA and remapping it! How? Well, a paper prepared by the NIH explains that “DNA circuits can be packed and unpacked depending on the ionic environment”[8]. As such, depending on whether the environment is positively or negatively charged.

If one could have this power of influence over someone else’s DNA in a test tube, just imagine the power of positive intention on your own cells, where a frequency alignment with your own DNA already exists!

Conclusion

In summary, we are energetic beings with the power to change our reality, including how we feel and impact others. What you believe, and the energy you send out into the world, can have a powerful impact both within and outside of your body. This energy has the power to change the presentation of your cells and impact other people.

Don’t let anyone tell you that you have no power or give you a prognosis where there is no hope. The only one who can determine your outcome, is you.
